FRUSTRATION IN MEMPHIS

Writer: Anthony CosaAnthony Cosa

BUT EXPECTATIONS SHOULD BE TEMPERED

The Frustration:

The Memphis Grizzlies have looked rough the past couple of weeks, most recently falling victim to three losses at home coming down to the final buzzer. Pairing that with players needing recovery time and questionable coaching decisions, Grizz Nation is on the verge of insanity (if they aren’t already there).  It’s been a season-long battle between the avid fans and the coaching decisions of Taylor Jenkins. Frustration has sat in for most fans already but there is truth to discuss on the matter.

The Truth:

The Memphis Grizzlies have had two rookies starting for many games this season. Jaylen Wells and Zach Edey have both proven to be valuable to the team in different ways but THE TRUTH IS - They are still rookies. Rookie players need time to develop and lock into the role designed to them so that they can improve on that, and take on a larger role over time. Fans are disgruntled over the Grizzlies success against top teams and it’s understandable, everyone wants to win. I believe though, that we are actually ahead of the curve, boasting TWO rookies in the starting lineup. Making the playoffs is an achievement based on that alone, but the fans (understandably) are ready for more than that. They want a deep run and a championship. I can assure you - so do the Memphis Grizzlies. Temper your expectations for now and allow an off season for these young guns to catch up with our big three. I expect both rookies to make a leap next season.

Defense Has Been an Issue.

Defensive scheme: I don’t know all of the X’s and O’s of the Grizzlies schemes. I am not on the coaching staff. I have, however, watched all but 3 games this season and have noticed that the objective must align with protecting the paint as a priority and closing out on 3 point shooters. The issue is, we aren’t closing out OR rotating quickly enough. According to this chart from X, we allow teams to shoot wide open 3s at an astonishing rate. Not only that but it has gotten worse over time and adjustments need to be made.

I am seeing Edey having to switch or step up so often when in reality it would be ideal for him to be utilized in ways similar to Gobert or Jokic. Allow him to drop and occupy space with his frame. Jokic being so good at pick and roll defense is what allows the Nuggets to manufacture stops, ESPECIALLY in the playoffs when the game slows down. This would prevent a lot of the extra rotating that often leads to Jaren sliding to protect the rim, the on ball defender chasing from behind and Edey crashing for the rebound. 3 players is excessive. Nobody should be expecting Edey to consistently be able to defend guards on the perimeter.

Turnovers are alarming this season

The Grizzlies are currently averaging 16.4 turnovers a game which is high enough to put them at 29th for the season (2nd most per game). It is a big issue for playoffs as the game becomes slower paced and turnovers matter more. It is the Grizzlies first season incorporating a new, fast paced scheme predicated on movement and penetration. This could be a direct correlation.

With all of this in mind, Grizzlies fans have every right to be frustrated but I ask that they also be proud of our standing with two rookies in the starting lineup and an entirely new offensive system. Clearly a lot of work to do but I think that there is a lot of optimism headed forward regardless of the outcome of this season. Keep your heads high and continue to support the Grizzlies through this adversity. Go Grizz!
