Memphis Will Have the West in Shambles.

Writer's picture: Anthony CosaAnthony Cosa

Not long ago, the Memphis Grizzlies were in great series against the NBA's beloved Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Since then, with Ja's absence and the Grizzlies rough couple seasons, many claim that Anthony Edwards is the new...

But I am here to remind many fans that last time it was Ja vs Ant with high stakes, The Grizzlies emerged victorious.

The Memphis Grizzlies seemed to be at their best with Ja Morant and Steven Adams working that heavy pick and roll on offense. Really allowed Morant to play at a level that was making every regular season game a must watch. Without Adams, the Grizzlies seemed to be a fraction of themselves. And unfortunately health became an issue for the team. Last season was the worst yet, setting records for most players lost to injury. With all that negativity behind them, the Grizzlies are looking forward with the mentality of chasing the Championship.

The Grizzlies will have a roster consisting of the original big three with Ja-Jaren-Bane. Brandon Clarke is also coming back healthy. Then you add in the additions over the past few seasons with GG Jackson, Vince Williams Jr., Scotty Pippen Jr. and most of all Zach Edey, it makes the lineup and depth the best it may have been since Ja Morant's arrival to Memphis. The Grizz may not have the ideal backup center some fans have been screaming for but if all things go well then we can be a serious contender everyone outside of Grizzlies fandom has forgotten about.

Zach Edey brings the same physicality that Adams did and has the ability to score in ways Adams couldn't. Vegas already has Edey as the favorite for Rookie of the Year and that's based off of minimum summer league action. Edey is probably the biggest piece of the puzzle for Memphis. Literally and figuratively. It will allow Morant to operate the same way he did with Adams with the biggest difference being if nothing is available he can dump it off and let Edey score himself. Edey is also athletic for his size and will be a capable lob threat under the rim. Defensively, Edey will allow Jaren Jackson Jr to be a roamer again which is a key role for him. It allows JJJ to play his best basketball in a role where he won Defensive Player of the Year.

With the come up of Western Conference teams like the Mavs, Thunder, Timberwolves and Kings; and the constant teams like the Nuggets, Warriors and Suns; the west would seem up for grabs in more of a competitive sense as opposed to it being wide open. Fully healthy, the current Grizzlies roster either matches up well against or equal to these other teams. For an example, Jokic struggles most when you can throw multiple big bodies at him (Edey/Jaren/Aldama). Murray struggles on pick and roll when defenders can switch (Smart/Vince Williams jr/ Jaren).

Nobody can predict the future in sports but I can whole heartedly warn the NBA that JA Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies are coming back with a vengeance this upcoming season.
